Freedom Tree
So much to see
In a free country
So much to do
Everybody wants you
Be all you can be
That’s all you can be
It’s so fine to be
In a free country
After all of this time
We don’t see the stop signs
And wouldn’t you know
They just didn’t show
But we all get a turn
They keep what you earn
You think I’d have learned
But baby I got burned
So you think it’s a problem
Well I can deal with that
We can always talk about them
But they’ll never know
Never know where we’re at
Would you look at the moon
Shining into my room
So far away
We'll get there someday
And it would've been nice
It would've been fun
But what can we do
It's over and done
Up on Capitol Hill
Stood a little girl named Jill
She said listen, Jack
I’d like to have my money back
But we all get a turn
They keep what you earn
You think she’d have learned
But that little girl got burned
So we don’t know what we’re missing
Well I can deal with that
Gotta watch who you’re kissing
Cause baby you know
You know it’s a fact
So much to see
In a free country
So much to do
Everybody wants you
Be all you can be
That’s all you can be
It’s so fine to be
In a free country
It’s so fine to be
In a free country
It’s so fine to be
In a freedom tree

The Duke of Inspiration

The Duke of Inspiration
So you say they shook your brother down
Well I saw him just last week
He was trying to stop the danger
of an information leak
So I said I wished him well
And shook the stars out of his head
Then I drew my own conclusions
From the words that were never said
And when the police with no numbers
Lifted clubs behind their heads
Well I knew that it was time
I looked behind and went ahead
Cause that scene was so over-rated
You always knew it was not for me
And now I guess I'll take your words back home
And put 'em in your cup of tea
It's not for me to tell you what to say
It's not for me to tell you where to go
But if what we've been through isn't gonna be enough
I guess we don't have much to show
So I headed back to Old Stone Gap
But there was no one there I knew
So I grabbed my hat and got my money back
And tried to look for another clue
There was a man on the highway he was protesting the rain
He had a poem and he handed it to me
It said “It doesn't matter how fast you're going
If you know where you're going to be
Well I found out I'm going to be missing you
When the big top comes around
You see I'm working as the tightrope walker
And there's uncertainty all over the ground
And I guess you won't have time to stop
As you're flying down the hills
But it's better than living in this city
And knocking flower pots from window sills
It's not for me to tell you what to do
It's not for me to tell you who to be
But if the future's as bright as the stars are tonight
I'm gonna sit back and let it be
Cause the big dipper's pouring a light on me
It's like a beacon in the shining sea
And I know the ocean's calm tonight
Cause I saw it on TV
It was the six o'clock news they were singing the blues
Another Neptune catastrophe
And the girl who was singing 'bout the weather
Started to smile and reminded me
Of the way you pretended to laugh at my jokes
But now the jester's got another queen
And the chamber maids in his castle tonight
Have done nothing to keep it clean
And the Duke of Inspiration
Has been trying to stay away from me
Cause the last time he came down I was not to be found
And who knows where I'll be
It's not for me to tell you how to live
It's not for me to tell you how much to give
And I know there's not too much I'm sure of these days
But if there's one thing I'm positive...
That we've both been changing tires
On the roads to which we were led
And though I haven't read your book in years
I can tell you what it said
Cause today I turn the pages
In my mind silently
Some have corners turned back some are painted in black
But they all say the same thing to me
Just names and faces changing places
All the words that time erases
Keeps you on track pulling you back
And there's no way that you can go back
So let's drink to the consolation
That we derive from the memory
Cause today we're riding stars and bars
All up and down the galaxy

No Promises

No Promises
Sometimes I’m up
Sometimes I’m down
Sometimes I’m away for weeks but I’m coming home
So if there’s something you gotta say to me
Then say it cause I’m lonely
Sometimes I’m rough
Sometimes I’m bound
To take a little walk in the danger zone if you promise not to make a sound
And if there’s something you gotta say to me
Then say it cause it’s only
Fools and queens in the city tonight
And if you don’t lay low they’re gonna make it tight
You got a message in the bottle and you drink it up and when you
Wake up in the morning there’s a letter in your cup saying
Who did you think I was
A man who accounts for everything he does
Who did you think I was
You get up sayin
Stop acting crazy
Well I don’t mind this night’s been a bit hazy
Who did you think I was
No Hollywood
Didn’t make you sad
But now your thinking that the reason for the clouds today is the reason that your feeling bad
And if there’s something you wanna say to me
Something you wanna say to me
Then say it cause I’m lonely
While the bank machines are swallowing the city
The girls on the corner are startin to look pretty
Put a message in the bottle and drink it up
and when you wake up in the morning there’s a letter in your cup sayin
Who did you think I was?
Prince Charming with a top hat tails and gloves
Who did you think I was?
You get up sayin Stop acting crazy
Well I don’t mind this life’s been a bit hazy
Who did you think I was
Who did you think I was…

Put It Back Together
04:32
|

Put it Back Together
Doesn’t it seem to be you and me
Take it all apart so we can
Put it all back together later on
And wouldn’t you quite agree with me
We’re restless souls of history
And nothing really lasts very long
And half the fun of building them castles is
Tearing them down
I’ve been run into the ground with these hassles
Tryin to find what I already found
Put it back together it’ll be better than ever
Put it back together you know nothing lasts forever
Though we tried and tried to make it right
It fell to pieces over night
And now it’s time to put it back together
There doesn’t really need to be a remedy
One day I took apart my TV
And I still couldn’t find a thing in it that I wanted to see
So I put it back together and it didn’t work
So I looked at the weather
It was a beautiful day so I went out to play
And I’m glad I took my TV apart.
But half the fun of building them castles is
Tearing them down
And I’ve been run into the ground with these hassles
Tryin to find what I already found
Put it back together it’ll be better than ever
Put it back together you know nothing lasts forever
Though we tried and tried to make it right
It fell to pieces over night
And now it’s time to put it back together
Sewn to the pocket of the big boss man there’s
A wink and a stare and a master plan
And a whole lot more no one will ever know
Thought he’d be a captain of industry
Not just another sucker with a lemon tree
But nothing really lasts very long
And up and down all the Main Streets and sidewalks
The worn down signs tell the tale
You and I we got buckets of daydreams
And a strong wind behind our sail
Put it back together it’ll be better than ever
Put it back together you know nothing lasts forever
Though we tried and tried to make it fit
It fell to pieces all of it
And now it’s time to put it back together

In Your Backyard

In Your Backyard
Why live in confusion
There’s no way out
You’ll just end up losing
He started to shout
She smiled to refuse him the chance to begin
He smiled and began again
Saying I’m alive and I’m hungry
Here with my family
Unhappy to be living here
In your backyard
There’s an angry citizen
In your backyard
Outside the home you’re sitting in
In your backyard
Watching all the businessmen
In your backyard
And he lays his head outside the door
There’s doubt in your reason
Reason it out
There’s fear of trees and reason to doubt
Just one big happy family
Fighting it out
Glorified on the battlefield
That’s right there’s a battlefield
Behind the jungle gym
Right by the picnic bench
In your backyard
There’s an unemployment line
In your backyard
There’s a dollar bottle wine
In your backyard
Goes down like turpentine
In your backyard
But it’ll help you fall asleep and forget
In your backyard
You can see a circus clown
In your backyard
Try to put his brother down
In your backyard
And you’ll go along with him
In your backyard
And you’ll let him suck you in
In your backyard
And you’ll practice his religion
In your backyard
And he’ll make all your decisions
In your backyard
Til he turns his back on you
In your backyard
And you’ll do things like you used to do

Nowhere Like You

Nowhere Like You
I been up and down these roads
95 is still alive and killing me
I’ve crossed the 7 seas
I been on a mountain top
Been under rocks and in a fox’s lair
If you should care
I been all around the moon
I been to mars
Road on stars of blue
But I ain’t been nowhere like you
I have heard the sound of one hand clapping
Hoping to be heard above the murmur or applause
I've heard the dueling saws
I have seen the world turn
Seen the times a changing
The minds a rearranging
I have made the sound of thunder clapping
I’ve told a tale or two
But I ain’t been nowhere like you
And everywhere the bars are full of artists
Sinking in a cocktail or drowning in a beer
And the people on the street
Some of them are living there
The people on the street
Some of them are going somewhere
Everyone on the street
Is breathing the same air
I been down a waterfall
Up in the sky with an eagle’s eye
You know I can fly
Now I’m a billionaire
Nothing much is left for me to say or do
Except for you
I've been inside a drop of rain
Been all around the coliseum waiting for the dew
But I ain’t been nowhere like you
I've seen buildings disappear
I've been inside them too
But I ain’t been nowhere like you
I ain’t been nowhere like you
And there is nothing I have seen that is like you

Jessica

Jessica
I’ve looked around
In and out of hearts along the way
And more than I can say
I’ve been let down
Waiting for that door to open
Thinking I might never know when
Time is gonna let you into my life
Oh Jessica
All the time I thought about you
All I had to give
Is what you see
And what you see is all that’s left of me
Oh if you could see
If you could see me dream of you
I’d be a fool to pass you by
Wherever you are
Time wasn’t fair
And it’s hard to make good choices in time
And the more I look I find
Time doesn’t care
But it’s good to know you’re somewhere out there
Though I might not ever know where
Sure would love to see you walking my way
Hold out your hand
And I’ll know the rest is left up to me
And as soon as I can see
I’ll be your man
And the rest will soon be history
Like an ever-flowing rhapsody
You and I will simply float away

Exit Reunion New York, New York
In October, 2011, soon after a rousing, 20-year reunion show at Bobby Q's in Westport, CT, members of the erstwhile jam band, Left Exit, got together in a studio made of reclaimed bowling lanes in Brooklyn, NY to begin recording what would, a year later, become RECREATION, a 2-disc, 14-song album by a band of one time road warriors with some unfinished business. Thus was born Exit Reunion. ... more
